Naturalista's Rock - Thank You Curly Nikki!

I was in awe from the moment I stepped into the door at The NYC Curly Nikki meet-up!

Naturalista's EVERYWHERE! Rocking FIERCE DO'S!!! OMG...whiplash...

And then in hushed whispers I could hear ladies asking where is Nikki? Has anyone seen Nikki?

Finally I spotted her, center stage and holding court, smiling from ear to ear and let me tell you that head of hair DID NOT disappoint! She is stunning.

I attended the event with lovely songstress Alex Young whose own 'do' two ponytails pinned up was simply GORG. And caught up with some of my fellow naturalista's: Shelli of Hairscapades, Michelle of Radiant Brown Beauty, Rece of A Hair Story, Miche'al, Shana, & Arlinda of Sofistafunk.

The event was sponsored by Mizani USA whose True Textures line caters to naturalista's. I spotted the goodie bags and was beyond excited...hmm #fail. A HUGE brochure and two tiny samples. Not sure if you have seen my head of hair but those samples would work on maybe an eighth. But hey they get a A for effort. They had Mizani consultants giving product and styling tutorials and overall it was informative.

I had a wonderful time, I enjoyed the company of so many warm Naturalista's, and got to meet one of my biggest hair crushes...Nikki you rock!

I Had a Date This Weekend...With MY HAIR CRUSH!

Saturday morning I woke up filled with anticipation...

I had a lunch date scheduled with my hair crush...

Shelli of Hairscapades!!!!

The first thing I did was take off my silk scarf, take my hair down from the pineapple and assess the 'do' from all angles...today's date was all about HAIR! How do you go on a date with your hair crush with wack hair?! #iamjustsaying.

Soon the time arrived to leave my house, I could have put on a burlap sack for all I cared but my hair just had to be right.

My signature style is a bun, or a wng pulled up into a high puff. I very rarely wear it out for fear of the dreaded ssk's. But Saturday I let the warm mist from the shower hit my hair, moisturized with a few spritzes of my kimmaytube LIC and voila one very coily BAA!! Thank you hair Gods!

I had just stepped inside of the restaurant to request a table when a vision of long glorious hair floated by...there she was Ms. Shelli...live and in person.

We hugged, she is one of those people that you feel like you have known your entire life. We chatted...HAIR of course. She is as sweet, kind, and genuine in person as she is on her blog. I like everything about this lady and I feel incredibly blessed to have met her. I subscribe to the theory that you can never have too many good people in your life.

We are going to be hanging out together this coming Thursday at The Sofistafunk Fall Fashion Week event showing you all 'How We Funk' stay tuned for photos at the end of the week.

Check Shelli out here: www.hairscapades.com

Have a wonderful day!

Why I chose to go 'Au Naturelle'...Because Going Bald Was Never Really An Option!

I was chatting on the phone yesterday with a new 'curlfriend' and we started to talk about my transition...I had a routine...I knew what worked on my creamy crackified hair, drugstore products were fine, I had zero knowledge of ingredients and the less I knew the better...you know ignorance is bliss.

I had been 'softening' for awhile then my hairdresser who I loved and adored moved to another state...mmm hmm the nerve of her. This woman had cared for Luscious Lola aka my hair for over 15 years, she knew my hair, we were in hair love, or so I thought...until she left me.

So then I was faced with the 'challenge' of trying to find a new hair stylist and we ALL know how difficult that can be. I've had numerous one hair stands over the last few years and then finally I decide to end my cheating ways and commit...I wanted to make it official...I wanted to let the world know I had found the one and then...gasp...hair dye fiasco of epic proportions...and let's just say that I was surprised to have any hair left on my head and thus I decided that transitioning was the only option...go natural or go bald...and personally I think I am way cuter with hair on my head.

So 16 months ago I made the decision...no more creamy crack...in the interim I have probably purchased every single product in the free world. You won't know until you try it right?! My natural curlfriends are always excited to see me...I tend to whip some product out of my purse to pass on to them and I am a walking review because you name it I've tried it. Since entering the Hairscapades Grow Out Challenge (
www.hairscapades.com) I decided to commit, one product line, six months, no cheating. So far so good. My hair is soft, fluffy, shiny...hmmm I may have to ask Doris for her hand in marriage.

Hair Crush Alert! Shelli of Hairscapades

They saying goes "a picture is worth a thousand words.'

And The Curvealicious Chronicles agrees...

Not only is she stunning!

Not only is her hair gorgeous!

She is also a sweetheart!

Shelli and I had the opportunity to chat via phone this past weekend and her personality literally jumps through the phone. We bonded over what else...HAIR and could probably have spent the entire afternoon dishing on products, treatments, hair obsessions, etc.

Shelli has agreed to guest blog here on 'The Curvealicious Chronicles'...can we say SCORE?!

If you are not familiar with Shelli's blog check it out at www.hairscapades.com, great content with product info and styling tutorials to help naturalista's like me get out of our 'bun rut.'

PJ's be warned...Shelli's blog will send you on a 'Google' search and/or straight to the BSS perusing the aisles for the products she talks about...I know I trolled through one yesterday and picked up the Devacare No Poo and had to talk myself down from the ledge...Why? Because I need to use the 3 month supply of shampoo that I have in my house up before I buy another single thing!

Have a curlicious, curvealicious day!

Confessions of a PJ: Doris New York Olive Oil Hair Cream

I cannot stay in a long term relationship...past a month...with my hair products that is.

To know me is to know that I am a licensed, card carrying, professionally certified, don't try this at home kids PRODUCT JUNKIE!

But I have entered a 12 step program, I am attending meetings on a weekly basis and I have the support of my fellow former PJ's.

The main reason for my reform was that I entered the Grow Out Challenge on http://www.hairscapades.com/. One thing that I do know is that when you want to retain length and grow your hair it is imperative to maintain a regimen. I decided that I would stick with one line of products for the duration of the challenge while wearing my hair in low manipulation styles and maintaining the same weekly regimen.

For the challenge I decided to use Doris New York Hair Care Products. The product line was created by a family whose life has been hair care. Doris has spent the majority of her life as a hair stylist and has owned a salon in the greater New York Area for quite a few years. The products were developed to help achieve and maintain healthy hair, & were tested on salon clients. Both Doris and her stunning daughter Marlene have GORGEOUS heads of hair...umm can we say 'hair crush'...

I began using the products last week and I am in love with the Olive Oil Hair Cream. The weather forecast in the Northeast has been high humidity=frizz-fro and this cream helped me maintain a shiny, moisturized, 'lil tiny hairs stayed in place, polished bun all week. The product is light in texture and not greasy. Score! Product just made it to my list of HG (holy grail products).

For info on the line go to: http://www.dorisnewyork.com/

Help: Does anyone have any plant fertilizer?!

So to know me is to know that I have had long hair pretty much all my life...with the exception of the day after a very bad break-up when I went and hacked my hair off and dyed it honey blonde...nothing like a break-up to have you make a major life change.

Last year I went to see my hairstylist who told me that after one too many trips to get my hair roller set, blown out, & doobie'd up and one too many uses of the flat-iron, curling iron, and blow-drier that my formerly luscious locks were FRIED.

Sigh. He suggested a cut....I ignored him and proceeded to take 18 months to grow out the creamy crack, & nurse my hair back to health. My formerly BSL hair is now just past shoulder length. I rewarded myself with a great cut and color. I am in a 12 Step program for former Heat Abusers...and on my way back to healthy hair!

I have entered the 'Grow Out Challenge' on http://www.hairscapades.com/, and for the next 6 month's I will be pampering my hair with products from Doris New York (check back for reviews), working on retaining length, and sharing my journey with other curly bella's on the road to long, strong, healthy hair.

I must confess that I have 3 hair crushes:

A. Tracey Ellis Ross...need I say more?!

B.. Curly Nikki of http://www.curlynikki.com/

Wish me luck! I will be documenting my journey here. Stay tuned for plenty of updates, photos, & more! Oh yea...the bet...tell you about that some other time but can someone please send me some plant fertilizer?!
